Windows is and was in control of the wireless card the whole time. Hope this provides you with enough information. Thank you again. I had the same exact thing and could not for the life of me figure out what was going on. I tried using the original driver that came with the dell laptop, the newer driver, no driver and nothing worked.
Thanks again! Thursday, February 18, PM. I'm having this same problem. I can't get WPA2 to show up in the list. I deleted the device and reinstalled but I still don't have WPA2.
I have Windows 7 systems which connected immediately after asking for the security key. I connect with an ethernet cable to the router and let device manager search for an updated driver but it reported that I have the latest. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. From the menu bar choose Action, then click "scan for new hardware".

Amazingly, even a service tech could not fix the issue. After much troubleshooting and trial-and-error, I found that the issue is caused by Windows XP itself. SP2 supports WPA2 after installing the necessary software.
The easiest method is to update to SP3, as this provides WPA network access natively, with zero configuration and no additional software installation required. Changing to WEP is not recommended, as it is easily hackable. There are tons of tutorials online anyone can follow and crack your password and use your internet connection for free.
