I suggest sending it back to playstation and if its under a year old its ubder warrenty. Oh and the restarting thing happens to me every now and again to so idk about that part ,sorry. Same thing happen to me too today. From what I information I can find, it seems to be something wrong with the blueray hardware and needs to be serviced. Sending it to sony is your best bet. Do you also find the ps3 heats up quickly?

Make sure your device is NOT under a warranty, because if you open the PS3 you will void whatever warranty it is under.
If it is NOT under any type of warranty, it is most likely a defective optical drive, as the discs are not spinning up and neither media is being read. My PS3 is over 2 year and its blu ray drive went out.
I was able to replace it myself. I wish I had known about this web site then I would have made a guide. Is it always the laser reader what if you play a game thats hard on the system I tried to play last of us and it made it like that I think I'm not sure. No way! I never put the two together! How can loading a game screw up your PS3? Show 1 more comment. My son's PS3 had the same problem with reading disc's. I don't remember how we did it in the menu system but it has worked now for over a month. You loose all your saved user data but I think once you log in you re-download it. This worked for me I did the hold down the power button and eject button tell I heard the two system beeps then used the fourth choice on the menu and now my system plays games discs again.
Ice Veins. If you want to make sure the system is fully clean inside there is a way of doing it without taking the ps3 apart. All you have to do is unplug the power wire from the back of the console but before you put it back in hold down the eject button and then plug it back in and turn it on, this should send the fan into overdrive which basically blows all the dirt and dust from inside the machine.
Walter Rose. I had this problem; took the thing apart, blew the dust out of it Decided to try a laser cleaner CD.
That fixed it. No problems since then. I have tried 3 blue ray disc drives from 3 different playstations 2 of which were working fine before the YLOD. I've got the system apart and its spinning the discs but not reading them. It will tell you how many songs on a cd but when you try to play them it says the data is corrupted.

Disc Drive was jammed and inside drive entry there was that plastic stick up which prevents inserting extra discs in so disc drive needed resetting mechanically After reset it didnt still load any discs DVD movie or PS3 bluray games but it shouldn't have both read lasers broken at once..
I noted then it didn't even start spinning disc properly so disc didn't go in place yet properly. Some Youtube videos shows "fixes" to tilt machine little bit or more while ejecting disc in.. I opened PS3 and heard that disc when inserted wasn't balanced i forgot put that what comes top of disc drive that freely spinning magnetic disc Hope this gives ideas to go through symptons and find out what is wrong in your case.
Not just blindly say what is chosen option over here. It's horrible wrong to not know what really is problem.. Great for the 12 year old, smart kid. Also possible that it was written by someone to whom English is a second or maybe even third language.
